Victoria and Coho Ferry
Wednesday, July 4, 2007:
Today were birded some locations around Victoria before catching the ferry. We started at Clover Point Park. The gulls present were all Glaucous-winged, but Harlequin Duck, Black Oystercatcher, and Rhinoceros Auklet provided some interest. An American Mink was a lifer for Susan. We also saw River Otters and seals in the water.

We backtracked to Beacon Hill Park and the world's tallest totem pole. Some of the more interesting birds at the park included Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Brown Creeper, and Bushtit. It was a beautiful park. We actually visited it twice, going to eat in between. There is a heronry there, but no herons were currently present (we did see one along the shore). Apparently a young Bald Eagle had ravaged the colony this year. While we where hearing about this, a Cooper's Hawk fly into a nearby tree.
After enjoying the beautiful park for a while, we returned to Clover Point. The birds were pretty much the same as before, so we decided to try the Ogden Breakwater. We walked all the way out (its about 1/2 mile long). Susan spent some time looking at the the kelp. Then we headed to the ferry.

We didn't see anything new on the trip back to the US on the Coho Ferry. We had Susan's Nuvi direct us to a grocery, then headed to Lake Crescent Lodge.

After getting settled, we took the trail to Marymere Falls (1.8 miles round trip). The falls were lovely. Even better, there was an American Dipper at the base of the falls. After that, we returned to the lodge.
