Cairns Mark the Trail

The cairns in Acadia are mostly constructed using this unusual pattern. This design is due to Waldron Bates, who oversaw the construction of many of the trails over a century ago. The Bates cairns remind of some of the much larger inuksuit that can be found in arctic Canada.
