Left Bank Trail
Friday, August 7th: We started the day by birding a trail on the left bank near Ilha do Quadro. Our first bird was a Blue-cheeked Jacamar, which gave much better looks than the last one. It stayed put so which let us scope it.
This was soon followed by a scope view of a Varzea Schiffornis. Further on, we encountered a Dot-backed Antbird. An Ocellated Woodcreeper was vigorously beating an insect to death. Several birds were present in the area, including Cinereous Antshrike, Roosevelt Stipple-throated Antwren (which I had missed earlier), and Long-winged Antwren. A Whiskered Flycatcher demonstrated its redstart-like behavior. We again saw Rufous-tailed Xenops, this time including a scope view. I asked about a woodcreeper, which turned out to the a Wedge-billed Woodcreeper. We had some excitement concerning an Ant-Tanager, which I didn't see, but another bird wasn't another Ant-Tangager, but a Cinnamon-rumped Foliage-gleaner. We also added Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper before returning to the canoes.
Right Bank Trail
We again tried the right bank trail we tried yesterday (with the monkeys). The Yellow-browed Antbird was again present. The group was divided in two when part of saw some Common Woolly Monkeys. Unfortunately, those in my group didn't get there in time.
We spent the afternoon cruising downriver. I spent part of the time on the upper deck. Most of the birds were the ones we had been seeing along the river, but Greater Yellow-headed Vulture and Roadside Hawk were new for the trip (for me).
Heading Back Downriver
We made an attempt to bird another trail downriver, but it was a tricky climb, and would much trickier descending in the dark, so we bagged it. Back aboard the Tumbira, we continued downriver to the mouth of Igarape Arauazinho. Some of the group went out in the boat after dinner. I slept instead.
I ended the day with 32 bird species including 6 lifers. This brings the trip total to 208, including 51 lifers.
