Both Paulina Lake (left) and East Lake (right) sit within the caldera of the Newberry Volcano. From back to front, the land between the lakes includes the Interlake Obsidian Flow (the rocky area in back), the central pumice cone (the taller hill in the middle), and the Little Crater (small hill in front).
This was taken from Paulina Peak. At 7984 feet above sea level, it is the highest point on the caldera rim, rising 1652 feet above Paulina Lake. The Newberry caldera is quite large. As you can see, even this shot with a 10mm EF-S lens leaves a lot of the caldera out of the picture.
