[Bella Moth]

Long Pine Key, Everglades National Park, Florida, February 10, 2007.

This striking moth is variously called the Rattlebox Moth, Calico Moth, or Inornate Moth. It also goes by Utetheisa ornatrix. The confusion in scientific names is because coloration varies, and brighter colored moths were called "bella" while duller ones were can "ornatrix". The name Rattlebox Moth refers to its preferred foodplants, rattlebox (Crotalaria).
