Ornithologists have long wondered exactly what type of bird the sharpbill is. It has often been classified in its own family, somewhere among the New World suboscines. Recently, DNA analysis has shown it is related to the tityras, becards, and another puzzling group, the Schiffornis group. Modern classifications put them all in the same family, Tityridae.
